"Plague Story" Bosham Local Custom Tip by budapest8

Bosham Local Customs: 2 reviews and 1 photos

When I was young we learnt a NURSERY RHYME we sang in play school, 'Ring-a-ring of roses',
only years later did I find out the origin of this rhyme.
It describes in great detail the symptoms of the plague, and ends with 'All fall down'.(thats when all the children stop and drop to the ground, The last word, 'dead', is omitted today.
One of the first signs of the plague was a ring of rose-coloured spots, and the protection against this terrible disease was, in popular belief, a posy of herbs. Sneezing was taken as a sure sign that you were about to die of it.

Ring a Ring O' Roses,
A pocketful of posies,
Atishoo! Atishoo!
We all fall down!
Some people even believed in using zodiac signs..
below is one early example
