"Castle" Buda Castle - Royal Palace Tip by rcsparty

Buda Castle - Royal Palace, Budapest: 164 reviews and 374 photos

This was the residence of the Hungarian Kings for centuries. Fortifications were built after the Mongol invasion in the 1200's. As with much of Budapest, the castle was built, destroyed, and re-built a number of times. It was destroyed when Buda was recaptured from the Turks in the late 1600's, and it was damaged in both the War of Independence and WWII. Today it houses the National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. The courtyards are free and well worth a stroll, as the views are fantastic.

Address: District I
Directions: On the top of Castle Hill (Varhegy). Funicular from Clark Adam ter (Buda bridgehead of the Chain Bridge), bus #16 from Deak F. ter, bus VAR from Moszkva ter. No cars allowed.
