Though Caen got struck hard during many bombings during the Battle of Normandy, that was a result of the D-day landings, the city is restored in it's old beauty. Caen has many old monuments, such as the Abbaye des Hommes, the Abbaye des Dames, the castle of William the Conqueror (and all Normandian dukes), as well as various interesting museums: Le Memorial (Peace museum) and Musee de Normandy. As capitol of Basse-Normandy, it has lots of shops and services to offer and Caen is for sure worth a visit. More detailed information can be found on my Caen pages here on VT.
Directions: Caen lies inland from the D-day beaches in the South Eastern part of the Cotentin peninsula and is well connected to Rouen (freeway, railway).
