Corneliu Copesu was an anti-communist activist who was a political prisoner for 17 years. He was born in 1914 and died in Bucharest on November 11, 1995. In the 1940s he led the National Peasants' Party, which was the main opposition to the Communist Party. He was arrested by the communist regime in 1947. He was released and then rearrested for "betrayal of the working class" in 1956.

From 1991 to 1993 he led the Romanian Democratic convention and he was elected to the Senate in 1992. 100,000 people attended his funeral. The memorial to him in the grounds of Creţulescu Church is a striking black bust on a stand.
