The buddha covered in goldleaf at Mahamuni pagoda

I like Mandalay. I know it is most of the time dusty and hot and there are many reasons i shouldn't like it but i still do. Much more than i like Yangon. It has a much more relaxed feel to it. I like the little blue taxi's (which you almost never see in Yangon), the tri-shaws (or 'side-ka' as they are known here) which are banned from most of Yangon's city centre. The Mahamuni Pagoda and its Buddha is indeed a sight to behold. And probably my most favorite place in Mandalay together with the teakwood monastery (Shwe In Bin Kyauk) where there are usually very few people and which is beautifully carved. Mandalay hill is an interesting climb and if you have the combo-ticket ($10) then a visit to the top is nice. Without that ticket (Mahamuni Pagoda and the teakwood monastery are both free) i wouldn't go all the way to the top. It isn't worth the steep $10 unless you want to visit some other places that you can enter with it.

Of course even though touristy an evening with the Moustache brothers and/or a Mandalay Marionettes show shouldn't miss on your schedule. The Moustache brothers are funny. And even though they (can) only perform for foreigners, it'll give you some nice Burmese cultural impressions too.
