GUM (pronounced "goom", not "gum"), which stands for Gosudarstvenny Universalny Magazin (State Department Store), is the name given in 1921 to Moscow's, and probably Russia's, most famous shopping place. The building, built from 1889 to 1893, was originally known as the Upper Trading Rows before it was nationalized. Since the perestroika, it has once again become a place of upscale shopping. Even if you aren't in the mood for shopping, it is worth it to take a walk inside and appreciate the rich architectural features of the building, the most notable ones being the glass roof and the fountain.

The GUM is open every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Address: Krasnaya Ploshchad 3
Directions: Ploshchad Revolyutsii or Okhotny Ryad metro stations.
