Hunting scene fresco, House of the Ceii, Pompeii

This house has a simple layout: the entrance leads to the atrium, from which the other rooms open out; at the back, a corridor between leads between the triclinium (dining room) and tablinum (public entertaining room) to the yard.

The main attraction here is the rich and relatively well-preserved decorations in what is known as the ?third style?. This involves dividing the surface into precise vertical and horizontal sections by means of plant or linear architectural elements, in the centre of which are decorative motifs and decorated panels. The best example here shows a big hunting scene painted on the back wall of the garden, part of which can be seen in my photo.

This house is some distance from the main entrance and consequently less visited. You can find it just south of the main street that leads to the Garden of the Fugitives and the amphitheatre, the Via del? Abbondanza.

Directions: On the Via del? Abbondanza in the centre of town
