Romania's former Royal Palace faces the Senate building across Piata Revolutiei. It was first built by Prince Dinicu Golescu in 1815 . It was then extended in 1882-1885 by the French architect Paul Gottereau . It then had to be rebuilt again in the 1930s after being damaged by a fire in 1926. Since 1948 it has housed the Romanian National Museum of Art, with the Gallery of European Art in the left wing and the Gallery of Romanian Art in the centre and right wing of the building. (see separate tips).
