I've placed this under "More Architecture" because there was surprisingly no category for Plaça Universitat, but l'Universitat de Barcelona is an attraction in and of itself. The instutition is over 550 years old and, although it is not world renown for a specific area of research, it has exchange programs and connections with many, many foreign universities throughout the world. The library here (you can pretty much walk into it if you don't look like a typical tourist, has an interesting collection of many Biblical and Near Eastern works, especially aids for the study of Aramaic and dead Semitic languages and small sections on the languages and works of Sefardi expelled in 1492. The ground of the Universitat are spectacular, and students seem to be ready to forgive anyone who wanders in and starts taking a few snapshots of the archways and the orange trees in either of the buildings two courtyards. The centre of the building is a large garden (although the gardens are accessible from a different entrance on the next street north) and the main hall of the Universitat has a large number of portraits of former and current rectors and presidents.
