Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur: 76 reviews and 251 photos

During the reign of Maharaja Man Singh II, Maharaja Jagat Singh of Jaipur attacked Jodhpur at the instigation of Pokran Thakur Sawai Singh Champawat in 1808. The city was captured by the Jaipur army and the Mehrangarh Fort was surrounded by the enemy. The enemies cannon were placed near the Victory Gate. A tough fight took place where numerous soldiers were killed on both sides. The Jodhpur forces fought gallantly and the Jaipur army ultimately fled. To commemorate this victory, Maharaja Man Singh II built the first entrance, Jai Pol (Victory Gate) and added the new fort wall between Dodh Kangra and Jai Pol. The marks of the cannon used in the battle can still be seen today of the walls as well as on the wooden gates.
