Sauer Beckman Farmstead, Fredericksburg: 2 reviews and 8 photos
The LBJ State Park and Historic Site comprises 717.6 acres. Some of LBJ's friends purchased property across from the Texas Whitehouse and the Pedernales River in order to honor this president from Texas.
The Sauer-Beckman Farmstead--a living history museum located east of the visitor's center, portrays life on this Texas-German farm in the early 20th century.
Set in 1918, visitors will interact with costumed characters who are garbed in period clothing, carry on with farm and home chores and who act as interpreters to the visitors.
Johann and Christine Sauer and their four children moved to this land in 1869. Eventually this family included ten children, one of whom served as mid-wife at the birth of President Lyndon Johnson.
The Beckmann family acquired the land in 1900 and built a new barn, added another room to the Victorian house and some porches after having an abundant cotton crop in 1915. The property was sold to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1966.
The site includes a farm, smokehouse, Victorian home and Log House. There is no fee, but donations are happily accepted.
Hours are 8am-4:30 daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
