"The Catherine Palace" Palaces Tip by dek516
Palaces, Saint Petersburg: 102 reviews and 201 photos
Just outside the city you can find the beautiful Catherine Palace. The grounds are beautiful, and a peacful change from the business of the city. The palace exterior, in a deep blue, is also very photo-worthy.
Beware, when visiting, of the HUGE lines to get into the palace. We stood waiting for over 2 hours in a haphazard line that inched along slowly. Once inside, you're whisked through a quick tour of a handful of rooms (much of the palace is still being repaired from WWII damage). The most famous room is the Amber room, which, as the name suggests, is made entirely of amber. Pictures weren't allowed, and I wasn't too impressed, honestly. I found it to be over the top and gaudy.
I got a huge kick out of the fact that visitors have to wear booties inside the palace to protect the elaborate wooden floors. It's a bit slippery, though, and I had several close-encounters with the floor!
