Admiralty, Saint Petersburg: 56 reviews and 119 photos

The first shipyards were in this place since 1704 and later the tower and stockade was added.

The Admiralty has also served as headquarters of Russian navy from 1711 to 1917 and could serve again given the most recent Putin plan to move again the headquarters there. But for now, it serves as a naval college.

The buildings you see there date from 1806 to 1823, an example of classicist architecture. But the tower above the entrance closely ressembles the original tower of the shipyards, that stood there first as a wooden one.

The promenade around Admiralty in the park and along Neva were already favourite among inhabitants since 19th century and the removal of glacis (part of the fortifications).

And the golden ship atop the spire serves also as a symbol of St Petersburg.
