Protea Hotel SAMRAND: "Samrand hotel" Johannesburg Hotel Tip by moss25

Johannesburg Hotels: 144 reviews and 190 photos

Let me be the first one to say that the PH Samrand is located in the middle of nowhere or rather an industrial area but if your on a budget and have your own transport then it will do. Finding the hotel was a real mission. On arrival we picked up our key at reception, which is ramped for those of us in wheelchairs and drove to our room (174).

Not a bad room at all, your usual double bed, tv, tea and coffee making facilities etc. Room 174 is listed as a paraplegic room (I'm in a wheelchair) and it really isn't bad but you have to be able to get along without any grabrails in the bathroom. The bathroom has one of those showers where you stand in the bath but the shower head is not moveable so washing one's hair is a challenge in the morning.... Basin was at a decent height. There are no grabrails in the bath, so if your physically fit to lift yourself in and out of the bath, then you should be fine.

We had supper on our first night at the restaurant on the hotel premises... It's a buffet meal and not worth the R105 which we where charged... We didn't have much else to choose from as the hotel is located out of the way and there are no other restaurants or take aways nearby nor is there room service....

If your in a wheelchair and you book the wheelchair room, just be careful with the parking bay... There is a disabled bay right outside the door and to the right of the ramp which leads up to the bedroom door. However, right next to the disabled parking bay is a regular parking bay which is directly in front of the ramp. So if anyone else parks next to you, they actually end up blocking the ramp and there is no other way of getting to your car, as we found out the night we went out... Luckily my friend was able to move out car and I could then squeeze past the car blocking the ramp... Something so small can be such a pain! But we managed just fine. ;-)
