Bismarck Memorial, Berlin: 2 reviews and 2 photos
Otto von Bismarck ? The Iron Chancellor is considered to be one of the most important figures in German history. Before Bismarck, Germany was a series of small states. He was Prime Minister of Prussia from 1862 to 1890. Through a number of wars with other countries he managed to unite Germany into a single country and was its Chancellor from 1871to1890. After a falling out with Wilhelm II, Bismarck retired into private life and lived out his days writing his memoirs. After his retirement, monies were collected, and this sculpture by Reinhold Begas, portrays Bismarck in his ceremonial garb as Chancellor. The statue orginally was located in front of the Reichstag but was moved on the orders of Hitler as it stood in the way of his new Germania.
