"October square" Minsk Things to Do Tip by Carletto76

Minsk Things to Do: 164 reviews and 404 photos

This is the second main square you find in Minsk walking along the neverending prospekt F. Skarina (or Independence street). And it's again a typically huge Soviet square. We are on the higher town here, up on a gentle hill and this is another governmental district. In the square you can find the Palace of the Republic, a massive funtionalistic building which works as a concerts hall and much more.
Beside the big palace there are some other big and notable palaces. Among them there's the fantastic Museum of the Great Patriotic War, which is the WWII as called on the Russian side. Unfortunately all the writings in the Museum are in 2 languages, Russian and Belarusian, which make them not so easy to understand for many people, since almost no one in the World speaks Belarusian, and not so many tourists can speak Russian too... BTW the museum is really interesting and you can enjoy it also without reading much since you are expected to know at least a little bit about WWII.
On the opposite side of the Palace of the Republic there's a small park and walking through it, slightly ascending you arrive to Mr Lukashenka's Presidential Palace. There are other public buildings and theatres there around and full of police and army people everywhere, more than usual (and the usual is already quite a lot there!).
