The present cathedral was built between 1836 and 1856 thanks to abbot Benoît-Agathon Haffreingue, after the previous church had been destroyed at the end of the 18th century.
The façade is rather plain, but you will certainly remark the great dome, which is more than 100 metres high and resembles to the dome of San Pietro in Rome.
By the way, everybody call this church a cathedral, but it would be more correct to call it a basilica, since Boulogne has been without a bishop since the bishop of the time escaped to Arras (some time in the 19th century).
However, don't believe to appearances, since the interior of this church is far more beautiful than its façade, so... let's go inside!
If you visit the Trésor and the ancient crypt, you will have a direct access to the interior of the cathedral.
