Having studied this church in my architecture course it means so much more to me! Built in 532 by emperor Justinian it is the first of its kind! It is built in Byzantine order, by the architects Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles. It is the first building that has a square base leading to a dome, creating such a large un-interupted open space. The glass that is under the dome make the dome seem weightless, nearly floathing!
When the church was captured by the Ottoman Turks, Sultan Mehmed II could not destroy the church due to its beauty, and decided to turn it into a Muslim moqsque, and its style was copied into a new style for mosques!
Being there for me was an experience on its own, seeing such an epic and important building! I hope that now this feeling is transmitted to you !!
