If you have a penchant for rural life and a laid-back atmosphere, Si Phan Don is the place to be. A world away from the chaos of Phnom Penh just a day ago, the intricate network of islands scattered on the Mekong is an insight to what life must have been in Singapore 5 decades ago. The group of islands, with Don Khon and Don Det as the most touristed, boasts charming Laotian rural lifestyle with its open paddy fields, ramshackle wooden houses and free-roaming buffaloes all set against the lifeline that is the mighty Mekong.
We stayed on the island of Don Det for a night. Reached by boat from Ban Nakasong on the east bank of the Mekong, the island has a comprehensive list of dirt-cheap backpackers accomodation. The island is free from motor vehicles, save for the ubiquitous boats, and cycling is the preferred mode of travel. We did not get the chance to explore the southern reaches of the island and a nearby waterfall but lazing around on a hammock under star-filled skies worked wonders. Allow at least 2 whole days to explore these precious gems!
Address: Si Phan Don
