Its beyond words.. I dont know much about the history but I guess this was linked to the Romans finding some source of fresh water outside Rome.
The fountain looks much better in the evenign with the lights on and needless to say is more crowded then. Infact it is difficult to get a place to stand closer to the fountain given the rush of tourists at the place.
Interestingly the fountain itself is located at a very small square like place and one can almost miss it had it not been for the magnificent fountain.
There is a metro station named.. Barberini de Fontana de Trevi and whats more theres a fountain right outside this station in the middle of a sloping road. Dont get confused if you dont find this fountain too great.
People throw coins for various reasons.. more so as it the legend goes that one returns to Rome if one does throw a coin.. Some also believe one's wishes come true if he/she throws a coin.
Personally, I had kept a coin without any specific wish but couldn't throw it.. It so happened the place was too crowded in the evening and I thought I would return in the morning. But the place was beling cleaned up and I had to catch a train out of Rome so I still have the coin.. Have saved it wishing I would throw it in Trevi the next time I am in Rome:-)
