Homegrown live theater can be a fun way to spend an evening, or Sunday afternoon, while getting a chance to observe the natives and experiencing the adventure of getting there. These types of venues are always off the beaten path. Another plus: no need to gussy up. Get the latest copy of Houston Press for a listing and suggestions or go to You'll also find information on restaurants and other subjects of interest to visitors. Sure there's tons of advertising and the writing is a bit tawdry but it's a helpful source. Try too, another great Houston magazine, very slick. They have a great monthly calendar to show what's playing when and where, including freebies that can be enjoyed at Hermann Park's amphitheater (or go to for more info). Other sources:,, or These tend to cater to the more affluent however. If you are taking the kids along just be sure to call ahead and check on what's playing. Some subject matters aren't appropriate for them. Check out for mostly family fare and a chance to see the natives "up close and personal".
