More than 80 million years ago, the rock formation you see here was a molten formation under the ground. As it cooled and solidified it was pushed up toward the surface where eventually erosion exposed it for all to see. This erosion is still ongoing. At this point this formation of granite is so hard only the most hardy plants can survive on it; but as it grows softer a wider variety of plants can take hold.
