"Over Rated Hotel" Marco Polo Mansion Tip by mar-kar

Marco Polo Mansion, Rhodes (Island): 128 reviews and 0 photos

We booked a 10 day stay from 20-30 October at the end of August 2007. Upon arrival we got the "ha ha" room. It was described as having a haman (Turkish bath). Not true. It has the remnants of one. What had been the bath is now a large shower. Very nice but misleading. The room was dark with only 2 bed bedside 25 watt lamps. If you want to read, don't try it in the room.

We were moved to a better room after 3 nights, but much of the charm was gone. Room rates are ?130 to ?165 per night with breakfast, but seem 30% to 40% too high for what you get and time of the year - end of season.

When dinner was served in the garden, the food was spectacular. Efi is a wonderfully accomplished chef. Breakfast was always served in a dark cave - not in the garden, and made for a depressing start of the day. After 2 days of this, we went into the main streets to have breakfast.

Housekeeping left a lot to be desired. Tops of shelves, lamps, mirrors were never dusted while there. Burned out or missing bulbs were only replaced upon request - further evidence of over pricing.

Yes, this is a restored Turkish mansion, but similar properties in Tunisia, Eqypt and Morocco offer much more in the ways of comfort and attention to guests.

Unique Qualities: Dinner was fantastic. Exceptionally prepared. Highly recommended.
