The Public Health Minister yesterday (March 7) launched its annual campaign aimed at minimising the number or road deaths and injuries during the Songkran holiday in April, warning car owners not to dive under the influence of alcohol. Public Health Minister Sudarat Keyraphan said more road accidents occurred over the Songkran festival than any other period of the year, including the New Year and Chinese New Year festivals. Last year, over a six-day Songkran period, a total of 530 deaths and more than 32,000 injuries were caused by road accidents, some 50 % of which resulted from drunk driving. This year's Songkran festival will be held over four consecutive days, without safety measures, the number of injuries could reach 40,000 with at least 600 deaths. The ministry named five young recording artists to promote its "Don't Drive Drunk"
