Although there are over 400 volcanos on the island of Tenerife, only about three of these are active. Teide is one of the active ones and it last arupted 200 years ago.

It's also the highest volcano in the world and so it really is a "must do" on any visit to Tenerife.

All but the highest 300 metres is accessible by four wheel drive vehicle, and the majority of those 300 feet are accessed by cable car. To climb the past hundred or so metres from the top of the cable car you now need a permit as the air there is thin and sulphurous and therefore dangerous.

We hired a four wheel drive and guide/driver for six hours at a cost of ?220. It was perhaps pricy for two people, though the driver would happily have taken up to 6 of us. As there's so much to see, if your tiime is limited then I would recommend the car/driver/guide option as you'd never see all you should on your own.

When the volcano last erupted it blew from the side instead of the top and this plus the lava flow from the side can be seen in some of the pics attached.

It's also amazing, if distrubing, to drive through the crater of the volcano and see the lava buildup.
