Sveti Bogorodica Perivleptos (St Clement´s Church of the Holy Mother of God Most Glorious) can be found close to the Upper Gate of the town wall.
This late 13th century church was first called only by the second half of its present name. The St Clement´s prefix was adopted after St Clement relics were transferred here during the Ottoman empire. The relics of St Clement were brought to Sveti Bogorodica Perivleptos from the church built by St Clement that used to be where now the newly built St Clement´s Monastery Church at Plaosnik is, and where he was buried in 916.
At the same time, when the original cathedral St Sofia was turned into a mosque, Sveti Bogorodica Perivleptos became the cathedral of the archbishop.
By the beginning of the 16th century the cathedral had become a collection point for historical records and artefacts saved from other churches of Ohrid, and became the archbishopric museum, which is now the National Museum of Ohrid, housed in the Robev Residence.
The guide of the church is a woman with raven black hair that will give you an excellent tour in perfect English. Don´t miss this tour, since she is very enthusiastic and will tell you many interesting facts!
Entrance fee for foreigners is 100 Denars (about 1.60 euros).
Next to the church you will find the Icon Gallery.
Sveti Bogorodica Perivleptos is part of a tour through Ohrid, described in the link below.
