Immediately following his conquest of Constantinople, Sultan Mehmet II ordered the construction of Topkapı Palace as his personal residence. The palace was completed in 1465 as a group of pavilions, each of which served a different purpose. For 400 years thereafter, the enormous Ottoman Empire was ruled from this palace. Over these centuries, various sultans added to the opulence of Topkapı until 1853, when Sultan Abdülmecit I left it for the newly constructed Dolmabahçe Palace in Beyoğlu. Topkapi Palace is now a museum and one of the most important attractions of Istanbul. Not to be missed are the Harem, the Throne Room and the Treasury, among others.
