Staroevreiska (former Boim), one of the oldest streets in Lviv, stretches from behind the Mitskevych Sq. to the Arsenal. if you stroll up the street toward the Arsenal, on the left you will see the remains of the Golden Rose Synagogue built by the wealthy merchant Isaak Nakhmanovich in 1580 for private use. The synagogue for call “the Golden Gate.” Later it was opened for the whole community, held the torah and treasury.
the building has an interesting story. the plot under the synagogue was purchased by Nakhmanovich from the municipality but was not registered or had a double ownership (the familiar for Ukraine document mess has really old roots). then the Synagogue was already build, the dispute for the land ownership broke between Nakhmanovich, the city and Jesuits. Nakhmanovich had lost the case to the Jesuit order. to perform the court decision, he invited Jesuits to the synagogue, gave them keys and offered to buy the building on the spot. Jesuits refused. But after leaving his house, however they could not reenter the synagogue without trespassing through Nachmanovich property. (the synagogue could (and still can) be entered only through Nakhmanovich house on 27 Fedorova St). later his wife (some say daughter-in-law), Rose, went to “settle” the case with the King. you can only guess about her persuasion methods :). but means justified the ends: she returned home with the document certifying the family’s ownership to the synagogue. after her death, her graveyard stone said: here lays the most venerable woman of the city.
The Golden Rose, together with other Jewish sacred buildings and cemeteries, have been destroyed by Nazis in 1940es. The 10mln project is currently under way to restore the historical building.
Address: 27 Fedorova St.
Directions: at the crossing of Staroevreiska and Fedorova. as in old times, it can only be entered trough the former Nakhmanovych building on 27 Fedorov St.
