"Find out about the First Social Projects" Information & Sources Tip by DanielF

Information & Sources, Brussels: 28 reviews and 72 photos

The first project of social homes for workers in Brussels can still be visited in the very heart of the Marolles, in a block comprised between its two main arteries – Blaes and High Streets. The quarter is called in French Cité Hellemans, after its architect, and was revolutionary in its design and concept for the time it was built (early XX Century).

There are different parallel rows of brick buildings in which the aesthetic aspects have not been neglected and with interesting perspective effects. The Cité Hellemans is still inhabited and has been recently refurbished to its former glory.
