Tube (Underground, Subway, Metro)., London: 422 reviews and 435 photos

When they are not on strike the tube can be a very quick and reliable way to get about town. Unfortunately when you have to take it every day like I do it will probably be the last thing you want to do. For most people it's the only viable option to get into the city. Once you're in town though you're probably better off walking from place to place as you'll be surprised how close some stations are and of course you get to see more of London this way. In central London you can never be more than a 5-10 minute walk to the nearest station.

The tube is old and need of updating and in the summer can be particularly hot and stuffy. In peak times you will occasionally find your face in someone's armpit, so if it's short journey would recommend a getting a bus or walk to your destination.

Single journeys on the tube are quite expensive - 4. It is much cheaper to buy a day travel card which allows you on buses, tubes and trains. You can buy these from the ticket machines in every station. An Oyster Card is overall the best option. You can buy a top up card (put however much you want on it) or buy a weekly travel card for 24. This cuts your costs in half (4 single jouney costs just 1.50 on an Oyster). You have to remember that there are different zones in London (1-6), zones 1 and 2 covers the majority of central London and the main sights but if you go outside these zones and your travel card does not cover that zone you may get a fine so it's worth checking your destinations.

The tube map can be confusing for first timers as some lines, like the District Line, branch off in different directions. Make sure you check the final destination on the front of the train. Maps can be downloaded from the Transport For London website or you can pick one up in any station.
