I liked Chaiten from the first moment. It's simple and quiet , surrounded by mountains and volcanoes. It has wide streets and a nice pedestrian area in front of the sea, the "costanera", for amazing sunsets, and wonderful forested areas around. It has become an important port as well as an administrative and commercial center in the region offering all the basic services.
Pumalin Park was my highlight as it offers innumerable paths differing in difficulty but equal in beauty. You have a very wide range of options even if you are a lazy cat.
Other beautiful places to visit are Lake Negro, Lake Yelcho, Ventisquero, Caleta Gonzalo and more..
There is also a museum in small Park Palena near the town, and a path leading to some impressive waterfalls.
Termas El Amarillo, the hot springs are a few kilometers away in an amazing spot in the middle of the lush forest, offering a camping site for the more fanatical ones.
Accommodation for all badgets is available. An excellent option for cheap home made local food is the Cocineria with women cooking typical meals in demand in front of your eyes ! I don't remember the exact address but it's one or two blocks from the costanera, going towards the Plaza. Ask around , it's very popular with locals. Some private houses have hand written signs put up calling you to order your meal in time so that you can enjoy it later in a homely atmosphere !!!
You can come by road from Puerto Montt or by boat from Chiloe. The boat trip from Castro is about eight hours.
