"Historic Tours of the Cave" Mammoth Cave National Park Things to Do Tip by glabah

Mammoth Cave National Park Things to Do: 57 reviews and 112 photos

It has been nearly 20 years since I visited Mammoth Cave National Park. However, I still have some good memories of the experience.

One of the types of tours that you can go on in the cave is a Heritage or Historic tour of the cave. During the time that I visited (which was after all 20 years ago) these trips did not use electric lights. Instead the cave is lit by the rangers, who throw torches at various locations in the cave using a long wand. The torch bounces off of the cave walls, with the hope that it lands on a ledge somewhere to help light up the cave.

The ranger told us that they never tell people where they are aiming the torch before they throw it, that way they can always say they hit their mark.

The description on the national park's web site (below) makes it sound as if they do not do it this way any more.
