The Swiss Café at is former location.

Post-earthquake update June 2011

The Swiss Café is located in the badly damaged Red Zone of central Christchurch and therefore not accessible for many months to come.

Update Dec. 2009

The café has relocated from its unique and super tiny premises at the corner of Gloucester and New Regent Streets to Cathedral Junction (107 - 121 Worcester Street). Despite now being an indoor outdoor place under the glass roof of this arcade, owner Giorgio has created an outdoor space between the café and the tramway line bordered by rustic Swiss banisters. The indoor decor is still totally Swiss, with a rustic farm table and bench seats, mock windows on the wall with red plastic geraniums, posters and calendars featuring Matterhorn, and Giorgio still resists to the ways of modern Kiwi life. Only cash and no takeaways.

Already when I think of the small Swiss Café I must smile. The Swiss owner named Giorgio ? as you might guess, from the Italian part of Switzerland - is such a unique character that he either attracts or deters customers. I like him because he is so unique, probably more Swiss than any Swiss in Switzerland ? but I can also understand why some people do not come back. On one of our visits he explained us his philosophy.

First and foremost his Swiss Café is a Swiss Café, and why should this style be compromised only because it is located in New Zealand? That is why you get Swiss cheese fondue, Swiss Bratwurst, Swiss Rösti, Swiss cakes, Swiss chocolate and Swiss Bircher Müsli. Oh, and Swiss Wurstsalat and Schnaps ;-) The walls are decorated with postcards, photos and Swiss souvenirs. You can make Giogio furious if you ask him for Panini, Bagels, Pies or things New Zealanders use to snack on for lunch. ?Can?t you read??, he would ask. ?This is a Swiss café? Why do you come to a Swiss café if you want a pie?? And second, he hates it if people want their coffee or snack in the second they order it. Swiss people are more ?gemütlich?. (BTW In Europe we compare their speed to that of snails LOL)
