I always enjoy to watch the Ferrier Fountain ? located beside Town Hall on the banks of the Avon river - for a while, as it is so playful and picturesque. And I also enjoy watching the arguing seagulls on the lawn beside the river bank on the Victoria Square side of the Avon ;-) As I absolutely love Victoria Square with its many treasures ? Queen Victoria and Captain Cook statues, the old tramway rails, the pole with Maori carving, the kauri and cabbage trees, the weeping willows, the passing gondolas on the Avon?
The fountain was donated by Mr and Mrs C. J Ferrier to the opening of Town Hall in 1972.
Obviously there were problems during construction times, as equipment for the foutain was stranded due to a strike action in England. As they thought it would be too embarrassing not to have the fountain in place for the opening of Town Hall, Mr Ferrier arranged for it to be airfreighted to New Zealand, so it could be assembled and functioning for the ceremony.
The Ferrier Fountain was manufactured by the same designers as the famous El Alemein fountain in Kings Cross, Sydney, so it is no wonder that it resembles this landmark. It is a so-called ?sphère de fleur? design (fleur = flower) which consists of three separate static water display fountains that are at different heights and diameters. There are two complete spheres and one hemisphere just above the water level in a triangular grouping.
Note: Victoria Square is the square next to Town Hall ? not Victoria Park (even if I might write Park instead of Square sometimes... ;-). Victoria Park is located on the hillside on the way to the Summit Road, driving or walking up from the Sign of the Takahe in Cashmere to the Sign of the Kiwi.
Directions: Beside Town Hall, on the banks of the Avon, Kilmore Street.
