"Soy el Capitano de la terra " he used to joke with his friends. But nothing is more accurate as the ship-house expresses so loudly his fearful love for the sea. There is every little gadget for navigating the imaginary houseboat. I can also feel a touch of humor and an obviously extraordinary way of the great poet's reacting to life. There is even a boat on the premises that has never got wet, and there he liked sitting with his friends playing the role of the "captain" he had always dreamed of.
It's a long building with many rooms and spaces fully packed with millions of souvenirs and personal gifts he had collected in his adventurous life. His love for Matilde has left her initial on the house and on furniture. He had a great passionate love for her easily traceable in his poetry.
In the far end of the house there is a blue room, created after his death, magically decorated with his enormous collection of seashells ... His emblem of the fish in the middle of two metal rings is an idea taken from a navigating instrument where earth is in the middle of the Universe, Here the fish, symbolizing the sea, has taken the place of earth. Another one has his endless collection of bottles ! It's open from 10.00 to 18.00, except Mondays. With an entrance fee of 6 $US - 7$US ( for Spanish or English) you will be guided around the house and given every detail.
In fact, you are not allowed to wander around in the house. You can rest and stroll in the garden or even have a swim in the usually rough coast in front.

Directions: There are several buses going this way. Get one in Valparaiso and tell them to drop you off here. Then it's a five minute walk to the house. It's 90kms away.

What an interesting house to visit. I think I would enjoy having a tour through there.
