My favourite city in Chile, Valpo as locals call it, has some unique characteristics that make it unforgettable. The most obvious is its geography. Expanding for years on the mountainous land the city has climbed on all levels of the slopes, thus giving incomparable views from every point. That's why Pablo Neruda built his house, "Sebastiana" here. If you can imagine all these houses painted in the most optimistic warm bright Latinoamerican colours then you will have idea..but let's get inside...
Valparaiso is next to Viña del Mar,and very near Santiago. It has been the most important port since independence, and a great cultural center, as in 2003 was declared "Chile's Cultural Capital" and has been declared an "UNESCO World Heritage", under the glorious name of "The Jewel of the Pacific"!! The best thing to do there is to get to the Funiculars - "los ascensores"- go up and walk around the snaking cobbled streets with views of the panoramas !! Walk on the top around the labyrinth of paths, so complicated that only a magician can make an accurate map. The funiculars themselves have also been declared as "Historical Treasure".
It had lost its glory when the rich families moved out towards Viña del Mar ( the "rich neighbour") and Santiago but all these new titles gave back some of the old charm. There are important historical monuments, Universities and cultural centers. There are museums and discos. There is a whole city,Viña del Mar, just next door.. Isla Negra is nearby and National Park Cerro La Campana is easily reached by train and bus combination. As a matter of fact nothing is missing !!!
Plaza Sotomayor is the city center and the platform in the sea just in front is Muelle Prat with an array of handicraft shops.

Directions: Muelle Baron, at the end of Av. Argentina, is a large concrete platform used for music concerts and other celebrations and for romantic sunsets!!
