I avoided Lallapalooza for the longest time, because the name kind of turned me away. OK, OK, can't judge a book by its cover, whatever. It's just not a name I associate with a place I'd enjoy. They claim to be a "big American dinner house and martini bar," whatever that means. I guess they have martinis. They also have a few sandwiches at around $10, pizza for about $12, dinner salads $14+, some pretty pricey steaks $30-$40, and their best deal might be the seafood and pasta dinners (sand dabs are just $14).
But this is a nightlife tip, not a dinner tip, so let me refocus... The bar is right off Alvarado Street, and features a big, well-lit semi-circle bar with maybe ten stools plus a few small tables. The bartender, Maurice, is one of the coolest bar keepers in town and he was quick and efficient with the huge 22 ounce draft beers (the biggest in town for $7!), willing to chat or be discrete depending on the customer's wishes.
This is a great little spot to grab a few drinks before a show downtown or to have your nightcap. They have a great location within a block of many of Monterey's best bars. Lallapalooza is open daily from 4pm until midnight.
