During the colonial era, and for years afterward, the tavern was a place to eat, socialize, and maybe spend the night. First opened by William Michie in 1784, this tavern was moved here in 1927. Meals are still served.

Tour guides show visitors around. You may photograph anything inside or out. Be sure to examine the authentic 18th century map, in the Assembly Room upstairs. Also, check out the buildings in the back--the log kitchen, smokehouse, outhouse, and spring house.

It's open year round, from 9 am to 5 pm. The General Store is open from 9:30 until 5:30. The President's Pass covers this, Monticello, and Ashlawn-Highland (and can be purchased at the nearby Visitors Center).

Address: 683 Thomas Jefferson Parkway, Char, VA 22902
Directions: From I-64, take Route 20 South (exit 121A), to Route 53, and turn left (east). The tavern is on the right, as you head toward Monticello.
