This house was built in 1864. It is the only house with the gables facing the Square.

The decorative half-timbered design was later covered with wooden boards. The house was designed for four small families. It is an early example of the wide-spread Schweizerhaus style of villas and cottages which came up in the late 19th century.

Every apartment had a kitchen with sink, a toilet, inbuilt cupboards and wardrobes, and the house had a full basement ? which has always been the standard in Germany, and still is today. (We miss this in NZ desperately!)
