Selby Abbey was founded by Benedict in 1069 and is one of England's largest parish churches. It is built on a base of sand ( as is York Minster) and some parts of the Abbey collapsed in the 17th century. There was also a serious fire in 1906 that melted the bells but rebuilding and refurbishment has made this one of England's most impressive churches. The interior is based on Durham Cathedral and the tower is Norman but other parts are Gothic, Victorian and Norman.
A notable feature of the Abbey is the 14th century Washington window featuring the heraldic arms of the ancestors of George Washington. The design featuring three red stars above tow red bands on a white shield is said to have been the model for the American flag.
