Tetouan had a very big Jewish community and it used to be called Little Juroseulm. Jews moved into Tetouan and rest of Morocco with the muslims of Andalusia in fear of religious prosecution.
Ishaq Ben Alwaleed Synegouge is built in early 1800. Ishaq Ben Alwaleed was the Rabbie for Tetouan and head of the Jewish community. He died few years later. This Building was renovated in 1996.
It is located Zanqat Ibn AlWaleed, "where else? :-)". To get there go to the Royal palace and ask about the Mellah, when you get to the Mellah ask about the Hammam or Deutsh. then ask about Elias. He lives with his parents and his sister Najmah. They are the only Jewish family still living in Tetouan. I got hold of him by simply asking about the synegouge @ the Mellah, Abdulmalik who is a taylor left his shop and walked me to Elias's house
Elias and his family are taking care of the Synegouge and have the key for it. They'll be very happy to open the place for you and show you around. There was an oven in the Synegouge, which kinda surprized me. Is that usual? I don't know? any way the oven is shown in one of the pictures
