"If you are foregoing a car,..." SF MUNI Tip by james_sinton

SF MUNI, San Francisco: 86 reviews and 102 photos

If you are foregoing a car, you're in for some fun. The local transit (MUNI) is the butt of a lot of jokes, and has the service to back that up. Buy a MUNI map at any bookstore (for $2), it's also the best map of the city you can buy. Each ride is $1, and make sure you get a transfer when you board (for a free trip within 90+ minutes), sometimes you can get up to 3 hours for one fare!!! The buses are safe and pretty ok to ride (once they come). Just ask locals what the best bus routes to take to certain areas are. The METRO runs under Market Street and out to the ballpark. It's basically useful to shuttle you along Market Street, stopping at Embarcadero (ferry building), Montgomery (financial district), Powell (cable cars), Civic Center (city hall), Van Ness (nothing much), Church (mission distrcit, boys town), and Castro (THE Castro)
