Maktub Caffé: "Excellent not-your-run-of-the-mill lebanese food" Playa del Carmen Restaurant Tip by vladrr

Maktub is a great little lebanese food restaurant. The food is magnificent! We tried the habibi platter (around 130 pesos, for two), which was a combination of traditional mediterranean entrees (but with a touch of the unusual), such as tabboulé salad, baba ghanoush, hummus, lebna (lebanese sour cream/yoghurt, delicious), dolmadakia (vine leaf wrapped rice goodies), sarma (cabbage leaf wrapped rice), falafel and kebab. Each individual food item was especially flavourful: I wasn´t that hungry to start with, but I had to finish it all! The teas that accompanied the meal (cucumber and mint lemonade, "piña colada tea" and "mexican april tea", around 20 pesos) were splendid and innovative, we ordered seconds, with the "piña colada" being our favourite. The prices were extremely reasonable: our bill for 4 people for the night, with tip, was 500 pesos! The atmosphere was also very pleasant: the café has a cozy terrace on the 5 ave, where we could feel the night breeze and watch the passers-by, and there was also an "indoors" section, decorated with embroidered cushions and low tables, beautiful music in the background and glowing candles on each table. Our young waiter was extremely amiable, and funny when explaining what some of the dishes or the teas were. We loved this place, and will most definitely eat there again! It is as yet an undiscovered spot on the Quinta avenida, as two other mediterranean/arabic food places were within walking distance, but at much higher prices and less ambiance. We have not tried those yet to compare them, but we´re working on it. We highly recommend Maktub for all conaisseurs of mediterranean cuisine.
