When I visited Belgium for the first time in 2000, the whole country, including many buildings and public property seemed somewhat neglected compared to the ones I had seen and become accustomed to in the neighbouring Netherlands, where I used to live at the time. It is true that the countries are different (not better or worse), but there are surprisingly a lot of derelict houses in many of the Belgian towns and cities including Brussels. The capital city itself is a weird mixture of modern and newly build offices (some not that newly built and plain ugly to be honest), derelict small town houses, old churches, the Royal family’s palaces, museums etc. A few years ago, there was a vast difference between the Dutch and Belgian trains, for instance. The Dutch being much more modern, and the Belgian lagging behind.
