The Mosque of al-Azhar was founded in 10th century as a congregational Mosque of new city Cairo (al-Qahira). it was named after Fatima al-Zahraa, daughter of the Prophet Mohamed. The first prayer was held in 972.
It is quite impressive structure, with its five minarets, six entrances and amaizing roofed hall.
The marble courtyard is original.
