  a massive rock outcropping?

Favorite thing: For a brief time after it was finished, the Monadnock Building was the tallest office structure in the world! This is considered to be one of the pioneering "towers" because of its careful interplay of a steel superstructure with a brick facade. Certainly the exterior of the Monadnock looks sturdy enough, but it's the skeleton of steel - and not the solid exterior walls - which actually makes it all "hang together."

The Monadnock Building was the work of the great architectural firm of Burnham & Root, who were also responsible for the Hotel Burnham on State Street.

("Monadnock" is a favorite word of mine. It refers to an isolate rock massive that has resisted erosion. Stone Mountain in Georgia is a prominent Monadnock.)
