Dominating the skyline is one of the city?s most visible symbols, a greendomed cathedral.
Built during the Russian administration, the severe, almost stark interpretation, recalls the glory of ancient Greece and Rome. Later, a fire destroyed most of the city after it was forcibly annexed by the Russians, and the Lutheran Cathedral was rebuilt in the neo-classical style, designed by German-born architect Carl Ludvig Engeland, and inaugurated as part of the 19th century reconstruction of Helsinki. Today, the rites celebrated inside conform to the Evangelical Lutheran denomination. Extensive renovations, both to the cathedral and to its crypt, brought it back to its original beauty in 1998.
