In the old part of Skopje (Carsija) is the Church of Sveti Dimitri.
The church dates from the 14th century, but the present structure is relatively new (1886).
The bell tower is separated from the main building, in a typically Macedonian fashion.
Sveti Dimitri became the temporary cathedral after the Bulgarians burnt down the Virgin Mary Cathedral at the end of World War II.
To me the church has a special memory, since my brother in law married here :-)
The sign with information about the church states the following:
There was in the medieval times as church of the same dedication near this church that during a period of the Ottoman rule was the Cathedral Church.
The present church is monumental three-aisled structure. The exterior and the interior of the church are calm and clear of decorative elements. The ceiling has an original solution, inventively completed by side lighting at the upper zones, through a number of different forms of window openings.
The spatial joyfulness is added upon by the calm composition of the altarpiece and the west gallery with geometric decorative styling.
Directions: North of the river Vardar and west of the Stone Bridge
