Kallikratia beach is the closest to Thessaloniki swimmable beach. There are some other beaches that are closer where you can have a swim but very few people go there and thety are not as nice or organised. The beach expectedly gets very crowded on any summer day. It is interesting that there is no serious industry to speak of in Halkidiki or other intense financial activity but there is still a two or three lane highway (each way) to get you there! That's until Kassandra of course, not to the last village. The beach is sandy and very pleasant, organised, with many beach bars, umbrellas, a lifeguard (pic) etc. and views of Mt Olympus which is just across the bay. The town is very busy in summer and has lots of shops, restaurants etc. Many Thessaloniki residents have their holiday houses there. It was originally just a small farming town, mainly inhabited by Greek refugees from Minor Asia that came here in 1922. My pics are not very fair to the place (it is better than that).
Address: Nea Kalikratia, Halkidiki
Directions: Take the Thessaloniki to Halkidiki highway, and turn right at the sign. It's about 30-40 min drive from the center of Thessaloniki.
