By the early 1800s, British trade interest had established Calcutta as its first stronghold in India, taking advantage of the politcal supremacy being enjoyed by the East India Company in this part of the country. This is the period which saw construction of large office buildings around the BBD Bagh or Dalhousie Square as it was called back then. The buildings were designed to convey the grandeur and power of the British trading houses. The Royal Insurance building, completed in the year 1845, remains one of the better examples.
